Top five self-care goals for the New Year

January 3, 2020

The New Year represents new opportunities to take better care of yourself. Here at Clearwater Counseling, PC, we take self-care seriously, which is why we've compiled this list of the best goals moving into the new year. Trust us, your mind and body will thank you.

Be kinder to yourself and others. Did you know that helping others can actually help you? It's true, studies show that we actually feel better when we demonstrate acts of kindness. So, consider helping a friend, coworker or neighbor who might also be struggling this year. Possibly choose to buy coffee for the person behind you in line one morning, hold the door open for the next person or lend a smile to a stranger. It really does feel good to make others feel good.

Express your feelings. Having a good support system is critical to your mental health, which is why you need to open up to those you trust. Perhaps try to write down a list of what you may need, and walk them through those needs so they can more easily support you. It's okay to talk about your mental health and it's also okay to ask others for help when you need it.

Give yourself time. Whether you prefer to read, watch a movie, take a walk or relax in the bath, it's important to set aside some time to do something for yourself. And no, this isn't considered "selfish."  In fact, when you take time for you, you're actually helping out everyone else in your life. You will function better at work, home and in society if you ensure your own self-care needs are met.

Try something new. Don't be scared to step outside of your comfort zone every once in awhile. Change can be good and you might discover a new hobby or interest if you do so. It's also important to re-visit the healthy activities that you once enjoyed. You might even rekindle an old love.

Make time for exercise, but don't beat yourself up if plans don't always work out. It's been proven that physical movement is good for the mind and body. Try to reserve some time to work out or take a walk during the day. With that being said, life can get busy and sometimes we run out of time in the day. Don't become discouraged or give up when plans fall through. Tomorrow is a new day and there's always opportunity to start over again.

At Clearwater Counseling, PC, we understand that it can be difficult to determine your self-care needs, which is why we are here to help. We can help guide you through this new year.
